The fruits the agouti ate: Hymenaea courbaril seed fate when its disperser is absent

چکیده
The neotropical canopy tree Hymenaea courbaril L. (Caesalpiniaceae) has long been hypothesized to depend on mammals for the dispersal of its seeds. Hallwachs (1986) suggested that agouti (Dasyprocta spp., Rodentia) inherited the role of disperser of H. courbaril seeds from large Pleistocene mammals (Janzen & Martin 1982). She further postulated that agouti are currently the only effective disperser of H. courbaril seeds, and predicted that they are now so critical for the regeneration of this tree that in the absence of Dasyprocta, H. courbaril would go extinct in areas where its other seed predators are present (Hallwachs 1986). Not only does this prediction have important conservation ramifications but similar predictions have been made about other neotropical tree species (Forget 1994, Leigh et al. 1993, Smythe 1989). However, these predictions have yet to be critically tested at sites with and without agouti. In this communication we test Hallwachs’ (1986) prediction on islands in Lago Guri, a 4300-km hydroelectric impoundment in east-central Venezuela. When inundation of Lago Guri was completed in 1986, scores of forested land-bridge islands were

Structure and rheological properties of a xyloglucan extracted from Hymenaea courbaril var. courbaril seeds.
Hymenaea courbaril var courbaril seed xyloglucan was efficiently extracted with 0.1M NaCl, followed by ethanol precipitation (yield=72±5% w/w). Its amorphous structure was identified by the pattern of X-ray diffraction. The monosaccharide composition was determined by GC/MS analysis of the alditol acetates and showed the occurrence of glucose:xylose:galactose:arabinose (40:34:20:6). One-(1D) an...
متن کاملMorphological analyses suggest a new taxonomic circumscription for Hymenaea courbaril L. (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae)
Hymenaea is a genus of the Resin-producing Clade of the tribe Detarieae (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) with 14 species. Hymenaea courbaril is the most widespread species of the genus, ranging from southern Mexico to southeastern Brazil. As currently circumscribed, Hymenaea courbaril is a polytypic species with six varieties: var. altissima, var. courbaril, var. longifolia, var. stilbocarpa, va...
متن کاملMendelian inheritance, linkage and genotypic disequilibrium in microsatellite loci isolated from Hymenaea courbaril (Leguminosae).
The Neotropical tree Hymenaea courbaril, locally known as Jatobá, is a valuable source of lumber and also produces comestible and medicinal fruit. We characterized Mendelian inheritance, linkage and genotypic disequilibrium at nine microsatellite loci isolated from H. courbaril, in order to determine if they would provide accurate estimates of population genetic parameters of this importan...

(Occurrence of xyloglucan containing protuberances in the storage cell walls of cotyledons of Hymenaea courbaril L.). Despite the suggestions of its pectic composition, no clear evidence for this has been presented. Here we show the occurrence of such a structure in walls of cells from cotyledons of Hymenaea courbariI L. These cells are known to accumulate large amounts of storage xyloglucan in...
متن کاملExpression pattern of four storage xyloglucan mobilization-related genes during seedling development of the rain forest tree Hymenaea courbaril L.
During seedling establishment, cotyledons of the rain forest tree Hymenaea courbaril mobilize storage cell wall xyloglucan to sustain growth. The polysaccharide is degraded and its products are transported to growing sink tissues. Auxin from the shoot controls the level of xyloglucan hydrolytic enzymes. It is not yet known how important the expression of these genes is for the control of storag...
